YELLOW MAKES GREEN In time for Earth Day on April 22, FirstGroup America

said it was implementing a waste recycling program across all its managed facilities in North America, including First Student, the largest school bus operator in North Ameri- ca. Te program will recycle enough used oil to eliminate 5,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases (GHG) per year, and operations are also recycling 7 percent of all waste includ- ing cardboard and glass. Tis represents more than 20,000 cubic yards per year of waste material “saved” from going into landfills. Additionally, FirstGroup recycles more than 250,000 pounds of used oil filters annually throughout North America. For the last two years, the American School Bus Council

has been disseminating information that one school bus in route operation can eliminate the need for up to 36 pas- senger vehicles driven by parents or high school students during the morning and afternoon school commutes. In April, incoming NSTA president Magda Dimmendaal said that, in actuality, one multi-tiered bus route could remove 76 or even 108 other vehicles off the road, that is if parents and others realize how much school busing can save them on fuel costs not to mention reduced traffic congestion around school.

HEAD START SAVED, FOR NOW? In the April edition of STN we reported about concern

from the National Head Start Association regarding po- tential budget cuts as Congress tried to take some steps, all be them small, towards addressing the national deficit. Te House and Senate couldn’t agree on H.R. 1 to continue funding federal programs through the end of the year but finally did avert a government shut down on April 8 after reaching a compromise to cut spending by $38.5 billion and passed a short-term continuing resolution to fund current programs through the end of September. As a result, Head Start funds will continue to flow to

local agencies. What comes this fall, however, remains to be seen. “We are heartened that Congress passed a budget that

allows all currently enrolled children and families to con- tinue benefiting from this proven pathway to success,” said Yasmina Vinci, executive director of NHSA. “We will continue working with our national leaders to ensure ac- cess to quality Head Start Programs, because we believe that progress and economic prosperity are absolutely dependent upon our sustained investment in the early education, health and well-being of at-risk children and families.”
