Green Sealant Protects Against Leaks at High Temperatures

A

recyclable sealant, Rexeal 100 by Ultraseal Inter na-

tional/America Inc., Ann Arbor, Mich., has been developed for impregnat- ing cast components op- erating in temperatures between -58F and 428 F (-50C and 22C). The seal- ant counteracts porosity and is particularly effec- tive for parts that have to undergo thermal cycling, such as engine and trans- mission castings. Rexeal 100 can be

used on raw castings at a metalcasting facilty or on machined and ready- to-assemble components at the end-user’s manufacturing plant to prevent pressure leaks. Traditional sealant processes wash away 95% of the sealant each cycle. Instead of be- ing fl ushed away after the impregna- tion process, Rexeal 100 can be sepa- rated from the wash water in one of Ultraseal’s Sealant Recycling Systems, which will return the excess sealant and the cleaned up wash water in a closed loop system for reuse in further impregnation cycles. “Certain chemicals that are com-

impregnation equipment can be incorporated into an automated production line for those who wish to impregnate all parts as a quality enhancement rather than on a selective basis. In tests determining

the sealant’s ability to withstand thermal cycling, aluminum test rings were impregnated with Rex- eal 100 and subjected to cycles of heat from -105F to 320F (-76C to 160C) at hourly intervals. At the end of the test, the rings were subjected to pressures of 290 psi and remained sealed. METAL

monly discharged today will absolutely not be acceptable to discharge tomor- row,” said Bob Remler, vice president of sales, Ultraseal America. “In the 1970s, there was a saying that ‘dilu- tion is the solution to pollution.’ That concept is gone now.” Rexeal 100 updates Ultraseals’ origi-

nal recyclable sealant, MX2, which has been used by Honda, BMW, Delphi, Hyundai, Sanden, Toyota, Valeo and VW. The new sealant is designed to have higher thermal resistance and greater hydrophobic qualities and be easier to wash away after impregnation. The new sealant is suited to im-

pregnation of small batches as re- quired, or Ultraseal’s front loading
