alcasting Congress and second annual Cast in North America show. The American Foundry Society (AFS) gathering was held April 5-8 at the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel and Convention Center, Schaumburg, Ill. During the show, the 2011
AFS/Metal Casting Design & Purchasing Casting Competi- tion awards were presented to Lethbridge Iron Works Co. Ltd., Lethbridge, Canada, for its truck cab support bracket and Eck Industries, Manitowoc, Wis., for its hybrid bus stator housing (see full article on p. 22). The Castings of the Year, Best-in-Show and Honorable Mention winners were on display on the Cast in North America exhibition fl oor, along- side booths from North American metalcasting facilities. honorary Hoyt Lecture on April 8. In the lecture, “Empower, Engage and Align—The Core of Next Generation Manufac- turing,” Dotson urged fellow metalcasters to engage and empower their employees in preparation for a resurgence of manufacturing in America. “My 40 years of experience convinces me that the next 10
years will be some of the best for manufacturing, specifi cally for the U.S. [casting] industry,” Dotson said. Dotson has been a member of AFS since 1972, served as a Cast Metals Institute Director from 1997-2001, and an AFS Director Class of 2009. He is a past president of the Ductile Iron Soci- ety and is currently on the boards of Enterprise Minne- sota and the National Advi- sory Board for the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership. AFS’s highest awards—
the AFS Gold Medals— were given to John Serra, Carpenter Brothers Inc., Milwaukee, for his role in developing nobake technol- ogy and service to AFS com- mittees and chapters, and Doru Stefanescu, Ohio State Univ., Columbus, Ohio, for his contributions to the de- velopment of computational modeling and research on metal penetration in sand casting, thin wall iron cast- ings and the casting skin.
