What’s New by Tim Shuff
Canadian Canoe Museum in Critical Condition
Last year was a sad one for canoeing her- itage: The Canadian Canoe Museum shut its doors in October. The museum opened in 1997 “to preserve and share the culture and history of the canoe,” with a world-class collection of 600
canoes and kayaks. Operations funding comes from donations and admission fees, and these dried up in the tourism bust of 2003. The rich collection has since been off limits to the public, except for four hours during an open house on December 27 that drew over 500 people. The museum is operating on a skeleton crew with efforts directed to preserving the col- lections and working out a new business plan that will allow it to reopen in “the foreseeable future.” Watch for developments at

Canoe Music CD Released Some hope for the Canadian Canoe Museum comes in the form of a new CD. Author and canoeist James Raffan teamed up with producer Paul Mills to compile Canoesongs, featur-
ing classics like “C’est L’aviron,” “My Paddle Keen and Bright” and “Land of the Silver Birch” performed by Bruce Cockburn, Fred Penner, Ian Tamblyn and other Canadian talents. “There’s just a lot of great music out there,” said Raffan, who dreamed up the Canoesongs concept while rifling through albums in search of music for canoeing slide shows and presenta- tions. “We’re hoping that if this succeeds that we can move on to volume two.” The CD will be launched at a gala in Ottawa on Friday, March 5, 2004, in conjuction with The Trailhead Show (
www.trailhead.ca/show). A portion of proceeds will support the Canadian Canoe Museum. Info:
