CANOE PACK LINER
“Better to burn out than to fade away”. —Neil Young
3. Touch up canvas Peter Van Wagner of Camp Nominingue Canoe says many layers of paint is undesirable on a cedar canvas canoe—the flexibility of the wood and canvas is too much for the thick, brittle, painted-on coating, causing cracking or “craz- ing” right down to the canvas. Instead of repainting regularly, Van Wagner recommends living with scratches as long as you can, and when the urge to paint is too strong, only paint over the scratches. For bad scratches that pene- trate the paint, duct tape can serve as a patch, or use model airplane glue and an old piece of denim for a more permanent and paintable patch.
4. Tighten hardware Tighten all hardware such as wood screws, and the nuts and bolts holding thwarts, yokes and seats to prevent the hardware from wearing larg- er holes. Keep the tools in your trip repair kit. While you’re at it, inspect for any cracks or chips in gunwales, seats, thwarts and yoke; and inspect the seat for worn webbing or gut.
5. Prepare for winter
Back off the screws in your wood gunwales on ABS/Royalex canoes if they are to be stored near or below freezing temperatures. Royalex con- tracts and expands at a different rate than wood, which can result in “cold cracks” around the screws. Simply loosen all the inside gunwale screws. At the bow and stern, completely remove the outside gunwale/deck plate screws and lift off the deck plate.
6. Provide good storage Keep your canoe dry and off the ground, gun- wale-side down and shaded from UV. If you don’t have a boathouse or space to string it up in the garage, Ron Frenette of Canadian Canoes sug- gests an alternative: “tarping is a good solution with the proviso that you place some foam or small wood blocks on the overturned hull, allowing air and moisture to escape from under the tarp.” Van Wagner warns about the risk of dead branches falling from trees above. Storing your canoe under certain trees such as birch will stain your canoe.
