Krake
Octopus attacks Heide Park Germany’s first Diving Coaster from
Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) has opened at Heide Park near Hamburg. Krake
(Octopus) debuted on April 16, and is more spectacular than Oblivion at Alton Towers in England (a sister Merlin Entertainments property), though not quite on the scale of the
Sheikra rides at Busch Gardens in the States or Chimelong Paradise’s Dive Coaster in China.
Merlin has invested around €12 million ($17.8m) in the new attraction, which
features a near-vertical first drop from 41-metres. During the 60 second-ride, passengers experience a half-loop, Immelmann turn, camelback hills and an unforgettable diving experience towards a lake, complete with water braking. The floorless B&M ride vehicles are unique in Europe, featuring three rows of grandstand-style seating, with 18 seats per car. The park’s 2011 season continues until November 6.

Skycoaster Down Under
Australia’s first Skycoaster is now soaring high above Wet ’n’ Wild Water World on the Gold Coast in Queensland. The attraction and its distinctive profile sit near the park’s wave pool and offers guests an adrenaline rush as they fly out over the property. “The placement of a Skycoaster is critical and this park really has one of the
most visually-engaging locations I have seen,” notes Skycoaster director Mike Gutknecht. “This has been a great project for us. It was very challenging because we had to engineer a ride that met the region’s wind loads, which allow structures to withstand typhoon-force winds. However, our team designed a guy wire system that met their wind requirements and it worked perfectly.” “The Skycoaster has been a fantastic addition to Wet’n’Wild Water World,”
adds general manager of Village Roadshow Theme Parks, Bob White. “It suits the ‘fun and thrill’ theming of our waterpark environment perfectly.”

Treasure Island at Djurs
Treasure Island is the name of a new water coaster from Mack Rides at Djurs Sommerland in Nimtofte, Denmark. The ride, which is only the fifth of its kind in the world, features a 28-metre-high drop and reaches speeds of up to 70km/h as riders race around the track in giant boats before splashing down in the pool below. In keeping with the theme, the lake is filled with sea monsters, pirates, and
hidden treasures. Treasure Island is a world-class pirate ride for the whole family. Djurs Sommerland’s 2011 season runs from May 7 to October 23.
