IT TAKES A TEAM THE EMILY K CENTER IS PACKIN’ THE HOUSE
Every school day, students roll into the Emily K Center from more than 30 different schools around Durham to take part in an academic program designed to inspire them to dream big, act with character and purpose, and strive for academic excellence. And even when the program’s not in session, the Center has been playing host to a number of like-minded community partners including The Durham Symphony Orchestra, the Duke Center for Documentary Studies with Club Boulevard Elementary School and the i9 Youth Sports League.
Coach Russell is joined by students Kevin, Neida, Rahssa, and Arianna during the fun-filled week of camp.
The most anticipated appearance though, was that of long-time EKC friend, Russell Newman, who travels to Durham from Florida to put on the Emily K Spring Break Camp which coincides with the students’ time off from school. Coach Russell fills each day with sports activities, board games, movies, smoothies, and much fun and laughter. “I always arrive here with the idea that I will have a chance to do something for the students and I leave having been the beneficiary. Knowing the kids at the Emily K Center has made my life better,” said Coach Russell.
ABOVE: The Durham Symphony Orchestra conducted a special free concert at the Center that attracted 400 people who enjoyed several classical masterpieces, including an arrangement from Beethoven’s 9th symphony. Emily K students served as the ushers and enjoyed the concert as well.
RIGHT: More than 80 students participating in the i9 Youth Spring Basketball League are meeting at the Emily K Center weekly to hone their skills during practice and friendly competition. i9 offered three Emily K Students scholarships to the program which were given to Neida, Amir and Teymi (who were nominated by their Lead Tutors). Inclusivity, safety, good sportsmanship and fun are key elements of the program.
