2010-11 MEMORIES
Great Moments from the 2010-11 Duke Hoops Season
We asked our fans via @ dukeblueplanet/Twitter about their favorite memories from the 2010-11 season. It was a heck of a year and all the love from the best fans around made these memories that much better. Here we go, in no particular order:
No one was quite sure what to expect in the first ACC Tournament championship meeting between Duke and UNC since 2001. Duke beat the rival Tar Heels in Cameron with an epic second half and the Heels rolled in the next matchup in Chapel Hill. From there, Duke knocked off VA Tech and Maryland while UNC pulled off incredible comebacks against Miami and Clemson in Greensboro. The ACC title game was all Blue Devils, as Nolan and company set the tone early with high-pressure defense. Nolan played perhaps his most complete game of the season with 20 points and 10 dimes as Duke dominated, 75-58. The Blue Devils won the ACC Tournament for the third straight year and an unprecedented 10th time in 13 years.
Duke’s first championship of the year came in Kansas City after an 82-68 win over No. 5 Kansas State. In what was basically a road game with a capacity crowd sporting all kinds of purple pulling for K-State, Duke put together a strong performance with Kyrie leading the way with 17 points, six dimes and five boards. The young phenom from New Jersey claimed tourney MVP honors as Duke won it’s fourth straight preseason tournament. The victory over the Wildcats was Coach K’s 800th win at Duke!
Duke survived against Michigan in the second round of the Big Dance with a 73-71 win. With the victory, Coach K joined Bob Knight as one of two coaches in history with 900 wins. Even more amazing is that Coach Knight mentored Coach K back when our Hall of Fame head coach was a young point guard at West Point playing under “The General.” Coach K is just two wins away from the all-time wins mark.
With a chance to pass Dean Smith on the all-time wins list, Coach K headed over to Greensboro to face UNC-G on December 29th. Duke fans came from near and far to pack the arena as the Blue Devils won 108-62 and Coach K earned his 880th career win. Kyle and Nolan put on a show for their coach, with 27 and 26 points respectively.
Duke was struggling at home against UVA on January 16th before a 16-2 Blue Devil run ending with 11:23 to go left Duke ahead 49-44 and in front for the rest of the game. Most notably, Nolan sprinted ahead on a fastbreak after a steal and slammed home one of the most electric Duke dunks of the year during the scoring spurt. Cameron erupted in one of its loudest moments of the season and the Duke bench was overjoyed as the Devils pushed ahead by three against the Cavaliers.
