atural Awakenings’ May issue is all about Women’s Wellness. Moms, daughters,

grandmothers, girlfriends, godmothers, aunts, nieces and sisters will particularly benefit, although there is something for male readers, too, who will have their own special issue next month. So, stay tuned!

I am grateful for all the women who moth-

er the world in infinite ways and have been reflecting on how much I value the wonderful women I have known, starting with my mom. A woman of incredible dedication, love and determination, my mom taught me how to pursue what I really want in life and has stood fast as a strong pillar through my various adventures. (You might even meet her when she drops off fresh magazines from time to time). By her example, she has taught me what strength of character and caring support look and feel like—she would do anything for those she loves. She is the type of mom we all wish for—there at every sports game, school outing and practice; chauffeuring our friends; forever packing lunches for my brother and me; and standing by our bedside whenever we felt unwell (she still would be if we let her). When it’s my turn to be a mom, I hope I can mirror the unconditional love that I was blessed with growing up. I also have fun remembering my grandmother, a longtime schoolteacher, as

well as a fly fisherwoman, knitter, baker, gardener and overall vision of health, even during the last months of her life at 100 years old. Because of her, I de- veloped a penchant for freshly picked fruit and learned to properly pick berries for homemade pie. Because I ended up eating many of the berries before they made it home, I also learned the value of her patience with children. Supporting this theme, we offer Jessica Iclisoy’s Healthy Kids article with

powerful education for expectant and new mothers (page 26). Local board certified homeopath Myra Nissen’s advice for naturally healing from the effects of using birth control pills testifies to the need to prepare our bodies in advance for carrying a baby (page 30). Caring for our skin is everyone’s first line of defense in protecting ourselves

from exposure to and ingestion of toxins. As the body’s largest organ, it protects our other organs, muscles, tissues and cells. Just as we should aim to eat and live as cleanly as possible in order to maintain healthy internal organs, so too we do well to “feed our face” with natural, organic, and health-packed nutri- ents. Kathy Stephens’s local article on skin food and whole body care (page 24) perfectly complements Fran Lefkowitz’s “Natural Beauty ~ Head to Toe” national feature (page 22). Like me, you know from experience how your skin feels and looks when you’ve nourished it with natural health-promoting ingredients. Although peo- ple- and planet-friendly products often cost a little more and take some time to discover, in my experience, it is well worth the investment. There’s only one you, so treat yourself well!

Please join me in sending extra love to the women in our lives this Mother’s Day and all through the month.
