COME TO THE TABLE:
Change the Food, Change the Future
T
he Wellness City Challenge and various local organiza- tions will host the Contra Costa Countywide summit, Come to the Table: Change the Food, Change the Future, on May 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day-long event, located at Mt. Diablo High School, in Concord, will offer a healthful breakfast and lunch prepared by students from local culi- nary academies; World Café Discussions about healthful and sustainable food choices; and a Q&A forum from a panel of experts. Among the list of motivational speakers is UCSF Professor of Clinical Pediatrics Dr. Robert Lustig, Channel 5’s Roberta Gonzales, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Ovick, Director of Public Health for Contra Costa County Wendel Brunner, founder of Wellness City Challenge and owner of Sunrise Bistro in Walnut Creek Cindy Gershen, former Superintendent of Education De- laine Eastin, and others.
Throughout the event, attendees will learn about the ways to support and participate in social change that will positively affect children and local economies, while taking care of individual and global health. The goal of Come to the Table is to create a local and, ultimately, nationwide transformation of the way children are fed in schools, and to move away from the Standard Ameri- can Diet, which has been identified as a major cause of obesity and Type II diabetes, toward a diet that promotes health and healing—a diet of whole foods. The event will present real-life solutions to these widespread problems, such as farm-to-school programs and other success stories.
