Meanwhile, the women were paced by senior co-captain Catherine Shomo. The veteran won MAAC Women’s Golfer of the Month awards in both September and October and notched four top-ten finishes in the fall season. She placed third at both Dartmouth and Rutgers and is poised to lead the 10-time defending conference champions back to the promised land in May.
Much like the men, though, the women’s team’s talent doesn’t stop at one player. Senior co-captain Katelynn Mannix posted two top-20 finishes and freshman Kylie Strijek finished second at an exhibition against UAlbany with a 74. Junior Julie Juchno and sophomores Megan Cahill and Cortney Tilley round out a small but tremen- dously-talented roster.
The Siena women earned two top-four finishes in the fall and never finished worse than seventh. The Saints saved their best effort for last, braving harsh playing conditions to finish a season-best third out of 20 teams at October’s Rutgers Invitational. The Saints also finished fourth at Dartmouth.
After their successes in the final months of 2010, the Saints are looking to build on what they’ve done and move forward. Both teams have a nucleus of veterans combined with influxes of young talent and head coaches Tom and DaveWronowski hope that’s enough for a pair of MAAC Championships on May 1 in Orlando.
