2011 Spring Outlook Justin Deitz

After strong fall seasons, Siena’s men’s and women’s golf programs appear destined to make runs at the MAAC Championships. The fall was full of highlights, and Siena’s play bodes well for the spring.

On the men’s side, junior Justin Deitz made history by capturing the Connecticut Cup in October. His six- stroke victory was the first individual win by a Saint golfer since Dan Abbondandolo captured the 2008 Cornell Invitational. Deitz was named the MAAC Men’s Golfer of the Month for his efforts. Deitz was the only golfer to finish under-par in the three-round tournament and his strong fall also included sixth-place finishes at both Navy and Saint Bonaventure.

Deitz’s star may have shined brightest, but Siena was far from a one-person team last autumn. Sophomore David Gushee finished sixth at Cornell, and also tied for 19th at Saint Bonaventure. Senior Don DeNyse III notched a 16th-place finish at Navy, and sophomore Jess Esposito cracked the top ten at the Connecticut Cup. The team also saw contributions from senior Jeffrey Smith, junior Nick Miller, sophomores Riley McGraw and John Van Vranken, and freshman Mickey Sutton.

As a team, the Saints did not finish outside the top ten in any tournament they competed in during the fall season. Siena’s best finish came in their opening invitational against Navy, where the Saints tied for fifth. With a deep, talented roster, Siena is looking to knock off the Loyola Greyhounds, who have won the last two conference titles.
