A
study into the NHS appraisal proc- ess ahead of revalidation found that
the current system is “patchy” and that some trusts are unable to provide basic information.
The final form of the strengthened ap- praisal process, which will be introduced next year and form the basis of revalida- tion, has not been fully agreed but there are ongoing pathfinder pilots.
The BMA survey found that 11% of doctors said they had not had an appraisal since April 2009.
BMA council chairman Dr Hamish Mel- drum said: “I am very concerned that so many trusts are unable to provide their staff with material that is essential for their appraisal. These issues must be ad- dressed before revalidation can be intro- duced in 2012.
“Our survey also reveals that some doctors are not even being appraised, and that sys- tems around the country are patchy.”

said they had sufficient continuing profes- sional development or supporting profes- sional activity time within work hours to complete the appraisal process.
The report authors said: “The results of this survey show that a significant amount of work needs to be undertaken before revalidation can be introduced.
“The BMA will use these results to inform our ongoing discussions with the various stakeholders taking forward the design and implementation of the process.”
Responding to the BMA survey findings, Dean Royles, director of the NHS Employ- ers organisation, said: “All NHS staff, in- cluding doctors, are expected to have an-
“The appraisal process is central to ensur- ing the whole workforce is engaged, train- ing and development needs are recognised, and that all staff are working to the high- est standard. It is clearly in the interests of employers and staff to make sure that this takes place. It is essential that doctors en- sure that their managers, who are usually also doctors, provide regular and effective appraisals.
“It is clear that the appraisal system for doctors needs to be of a high standard across the service and we are working with the GMC, and other stakeholders, to pro- vide guidance and supporting information for employers.
“Effective and regular appraisal will be at the heart of revalidation so it is essential that well managed processes are in place now.”

nline communities of physicians in the UK and Germany, Austria and
Switzerland have signed a ‘strategic alli- ance’ to boost medical collaboration and online learning across Europe.
The deal between
doctors.net.uk and the German-speaking online medical network coliquio, follows similar agreements with physician communities in France, Spain, Portugal and Sweden.
The pharmaceutical industry, health or- ganisations and other companies wanting feedback from physicians, or wanting to supply them with important information, will now have access to an extensive, and ever-expanding, international community, the organisations said.
Doctors.net.uk has a membership of 180,000, while the member-owned coliq- uio, founded in 2007, has 41,000 members from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

uk, said: “Following this agreement with coliquio, we will have aligned success- fully a number of key European physician communities. Not only does this create distinct benefit for members, leading phar- maceutical brands and healthcare com- municators can now communicate across geographies through a network of trusted online channels, all of which are proven to engage effectively with physicians.”
Martin Drees, founder and CEO of coliq- uio, said: “Operating at a European level
gives us the opportunity to create the most comprehensive online collection of profes- sional medical resources and learning ma- terials. Both organisations will profit from sharing their knowledge and experiences regarding online physician communities and hence be able to even better serve doctors and clients from the pharmaceu- tical industry and related sectors in the future.”
