PATIENT SAFETY

NHS Wales has placed quality improvement and patient safety at the heart of its strategy through the 1000 Lives Plus national programme, explainsDr Alan Willson.

A

s a nation, Wales is seeing the ben- efits of a huge drive towards greater

quality in healthcare. One example of this drive is the achievements of the 1000 Lives campaign, which aimed to save an addition- al 1,000 lives and prevent 50,000 episodes of harm in Welsh healthcare. Final pub- lished figures estimated that an additional 1,199 lives were saved during the two-year initiative. NHS Wales is now working on a follow-up strategy; 1000 Lives Plus.

“NHS staff save lives everyday. 1000 Lives Plus is helping them save even more,” says programme director, Dr Alan Willson.

“The programme has raised the profile of patient-centred care in every health board and trust in Wales. We are seeing staff at all levels, across all sectors – both clinical and non-clinical – committed to improving the quality of care their patients receive.”

Increasing demands

key element in meeting the increasing de- mands on healthcare and the unprecedent- ed economic pressure the NHS in Wales is currently facing.

Dr Willson said: “Patients have the right to expect the same high quality of care wher- ever they receive their treatment. We are convinced that high quality, consistent care in every location produces better outcomes for patients at a lower cost.”

1000 Lives Plus is focussed on accelerating the pace of change to spread new ways of working introduced by the original 1000 Lives campaign to every ward, practice and organisation in Wales, he said.

“We have clear aims to reduce harm, waste and variation in Welsh healthcare which will ensure the safest and highest quality of care for patients in Wales. This includes commitments from all health boards and trusts to reduce mortality by 5% through the application of proven better practice.”

1000 Lives Plus is one of several national

programmes which form a five year strate- gic framework for NHS Wales that focuses on improving outcomes, quality and the overall experience of care provided.

The programmes support the Welsh Assembly Government’s vision for ‘world class’ healthcare by 2015.

Model for Improvement

The programme uses the Model for Improvement, an evidence-based change mechanism developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in the US.

A collaborative model brings together staff from across the country, and across clinical and managerial settings, to learn new ways of working, which can then be put into practice and evaluated.

These mini-collaboratives focus on distinct areas of improvement, seeking immediate areas of change.

They use learning sessions to discuss and
