Christine Seidler of Elekta explains how automating clinical and administrative processes via an electronic medical record gives clinicians the tools they need to deliver better patient care.
T
o improve clinical practice overall, a comprehensive oncology information
system enables clinics to move beyond basic automation and convert Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data into aggre- gated, multi-dimensional information to support important decision making in the treatment of patients and improving pa- tient outcomes.
Next generation oncology information systems like MOSAIQ from Elekta can help manage the complex needs of today’s cancer centres, combining a flexible, inte- grated patient focused software solution with best practice care and quality proc- esses built in.
Used by over 5,000 clinical centres glo- bally, MOSAIQ ensures the utmost accu- racy and safe patient care at every stage of treatment, from checking patient demo- graphics, recording allergies and drugs, lab results, image review and registration and communication with the linear accel- erator to verify treatment parameters and table positions.
Efficient and safer working practices
MOSAIQ consolidates and centralises multiple oncology department functions into a single database, providing improved information access and communication throughout the oncology department. Customisable workflows, clinician work- sheets, checklists and protocols ensure set tasks are completed with automatic safety alerts when activities deviate from standard practice or are outside a defined range.
By providing access to both images and data in a single patient record, it elimi- nates the need for redundant systems, streamlines charting related tasks requir- ing both image and data review, and pro- vides a complete picture of patient care.
Evidence based medicine
MOSAIQ enables the creation of proto- cols and processes to capture, analyse and apply evidence-based medicine for more informed decision making on treatment techniques, outcomes and performance.

Its seamless connectivity to hospital sys- tems, diagnostic, treatment planning and delivery devices regardless of ven- dor ensures superior flexibility. Elekta’s open systems approach means existing infrastructure can be utilised to connect to virtually any vendor equipment or soft- ware system across single or multiple net- worked centres.
The Arden Cancer Centre (ACC) is realis- ing the benefits of creating a fully network- wide oncology information solution to maximise its efficiency, productivity and cost management.
ACC is part of the wider University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust. The centre provides an adult oncology service comprising chemother- apy and radiation therapy for the Arden Cancer Network.
The ACC chose MOSAIQ to provide the complete EMR for its service throughout the centre, haematology, palliative care and two other off-site NHS hospitals, to provide standardised medical records throughout its network. A staff of 300 uses MOSAIQ across the network and carries out 200 radiation therapy treatments and 80-100 chemotherapy treatments each day across the three sites.
The implementation of the EMR has pro- duced immediate and measurable benefits to clinical staff and patients, with timely, accurate information available at each point of care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The introduction of MOSAIQ has im- proved the quality of data and quality of patient care, and has relieved clinical staff of the paperwork burden, allowing more time to take care of patients.
This has reduced routine overtime that was often used to catch up with paper records at the end of the day. They can now treat more patients and dramatically reduce wait times.
MOSAIQ oncology information manage- ment solutions from Elekta are used in over 5,000 cancer centres globally—from practices with a single clinician to groups with over 100 physicians.
Elekta brings a truly unique level of expe- rience, stability and oncology knowledge to address customers’ clinical workflow challenges and deliver exceptional infor- mation solutions and efficient workflows.
