Streaming Live Video over a Wireless 3G Network By Jon Epperson, National Sales Manager, KBC Networks

In the world of physical security, transmitting video surveillance data has traditionally been handled using analog, IP or hybrid networks that are comprised of a combination of copper, fiber, wireless and Ethernet components. This has enabled organizations to create a controlled network environment to ensure the integrity and security of important video traffic as it travels from point A to point B.

But what about a public 3G (cellular) network? Sadly, even as the big wireless carriers evolve their networks from 3G to 4G in 2011, public wireless networks have never really provided a viable medium for securely transmitting bandwidth- hogging video streams without jeopardizing video quality. That is, until now.

The Game-Changer

KBC’s ThruLink, a powerful hardware VPN device, makes it possible to stream live, high-quality video over a wireless 3G network. By establishing a secure virtual connection – or tunnel – between two networked devices over a public network and constantly monitoring the parameters of that path, ThruLink optimizes the available bandwidth and minimizes latency to ensure the best possible throughput.

ThruLink is currently enabling the harbor authority at a major commercial port to create a secure network for transmitting streaming video data without the costs of a traditional security infrastructure. While the port bustled with activity during normal business hours, activity slowed significantly during the evenings and weekends, raising the chances that theft, accidents and alarms would go undetected. To address the problem, the harbor authority sought to implement a secure, mobile monitoring system to augment security. In this case, a high-quality, secure transmission system was required to stream live video from a wireless link in a patrol vehicle back to the port office using a 250kbps channel.

The solution came in the form of a secure mobile system using standard capacity ThruLink units – one installed in each vehicle and one at the port office – to transmit live video via the Internet. By using ThruLink, the 250kbps communications channel is optimized to ensure optimum video quality while maintaining a secure, encrypted transmission.

Today, patrol vehicles at the port are using ThruLink to provide high-quality, real-time surveillance feeds for more than 400 companies. Video is recorded locally within the vehicle, and operators back at the control room are able to monitor the video received from the vehicles and pinpoint any vehicle’s location to takeaction when necessary. With ThruLink in place, the channel remains secure, even with the data being transmitted across a public network.
