Power over Ethernet (PoE): Saving Labor Costs

and Reducing Cabling with a Single Click By Jeff Beauchaine, Business Development, IP/DataComm, ADI

(cont'd) Clear Advantages of PoE:

Lower Installation Time: You run the wire to the mounted device, you “click” the RJ-45 connector into the camera or other device and you are done installing all power and communications. If time is money, this saves LOT of money.

Flexibility: PoE can come from a full PoE switch, but in the event that you have only a few devices that need PoE, a “mid span” or “PoE injector” can be easily added near a conventional Ethernet switch to inject the needed power into the solution while leaving the remaining switch connections unpowered. This is especially useful if installing a PoE solution some time after the original network switch was installed.

While there is no debate about the advantages of PoE, a word of warning is also necessary. Some manufacturers have built in limitations on PoE switches based on the prediction that all connections in most customer solutions will be lower power consumption or that only some PoE will be needed—this means that in some instances an installer may find that there is insufficient power available for the intended solution. A good way to avoid this issue is to know how much power you will need in advance. Be sure the PoE source you select has enough power or select one that offers full PoE on all ports, especially if new cameras or other devices may be added in the future. Generally, 802.3af (15.4 watts) per port is sufficient for typical IP cameras and other IP devices. Plan for 802.3AT if you may add PTZ cameras in the future.

A good understanding of PoE is an advantage no security systems installer should overlook. It truly helps your systems stand apart from the classic analog installations and has a real impact on time, safety, and overall cost of your project. When you think about power, remember to think about IP.
