NEW Comnet EoVDSL2 Product Line Uses Existing Cabling Infrastructure To Provide An

Integrated Competitive Advantage By Frank Haight, ComNet VP of Marketing

Recently a casino in Las Vegas called for an upgrade from their existing coaxial cable-based CCTV system to a modern video-over-Ethernet system. One of the many project integrators turned to ComNet for a transmission solution to provide a competitive advantage and win the project. The challenge was to recommend the most cost-effective method to bring the new IP camera feeds back into the monitoring location. Most of the integrators suggested installing new fiber optic Ethernet media in addition to the required network hardware. The existing CCTV system was based on installed analog cameras using coaxial cable and twisted pair UTP as the transmission medium. There is no question that fiber is best medium to transport all signal types, be it audio, video, data or Ethernet.

In the past when optical fiber was not installed, and coaxial or twisted pair was used as the media for transmission, upgrading a system to either Ethernet or some other form of digital transmission was a costly proposition. The existing copper media would have to be replaced and optical fiber would have to be installed. This not only added extra cost to

the system but also had a major impact on the time to deploy. ComNet recommended a solution to take advantage of the existing cabling. Using the ComNet new Ethernet over VDSL products, existing cabling infrastructure was utilized and remained in place.

The recommended Ethernet devices: IP cameras, Network Video Recorders and access control systems could be directly connected to the CNFE1CL1MC product’s RJ-45 interface. The corresponding Ethernet packets could be transmitted as far as 1500 feet on coax or 10,000 feet on twisted pair. By using the CNFECL1MC, upgrades no longer require a total system retrofit. This allows for a greater percentage of the project budget to be allocated for current and future system features. The value proposition is exceptional and it allowed this integrator to hold a true competitive advantage.

This innovative ComNet solution saved the casino thousands of dollars of media and labor costs and gave the integrator the edge needed to win the project.

In today’s competitive market place, offering a more cost effective solution means a better chance of securing a project. Dollars are not spent “behind the wall,” but instead, are spent on tangible user benefits.

For today’s integrator, partnering with a leading transmission company with a broad solution set offers the integrator a wide variety of solutions to meet customers’ needs. ComNet is positioned as not only a leader in Fiber Optics transmission, but also as an innovative company in tune with today’s evolving transmission equipment needs.
