Latest research into the beauty market from the NPD Group for 2010 shows strong growth in the total UK prestige beauty market, which grew to £1.5 billion - a growth of 8.3 percent, compared to 2009. The market analysed consists of prestige make-up, skin care and perfume.


Whilst value sales of prestige make-up grew 5.2 percent, unit sales grew 0.4 percent over the year, delivering anAverage Selling Price increase from £18.25 to £19.12 and driving growth in the category. Face make-up remains the largest sub-category of the market, with value up by 5.3 percent and volume up 0.7 percent.


The area making the biggest contribution to growth was gift sets, with value up 13.7 percent year on year.


The prestige skin care category is now larger than the make-up category in value sales having posted growth of 10.6 percent. The value growth was 6.4 percent, taking market sales to 16.6 million units. Facial skin care is the largest sub-category in the market and contributed the most to growth, particularly on the back of anti-ageing products. It is also a sub-category that achieved growth of 12.2 percent in value and 6.9 percent in units.

Sales of fragrance grew slightly faster than the total prestige beauty market in 2010, with women’s fragrance growing faster in terms of unit sales, but men’s fragrance grew more in sales value.
