: 17th April 2011 Scottish Nail Technician of the Year
This year sees Scottish Beauty host the eighth annual Scottish NailTechnician of theYear competition, with evenmore new and exciting categories to compete in.
As Scotland’s only national nail competition, Scottish NailTechnician of theYear attracts competitors from across the country and beyond all hoping to be named the winner in their chosen field.
This year we have 12 categories for you to enter - making this our biggest competition yet and, following feedback from previous years, we’ve again revamped this year’s categories to ensure our TopTechs are taken to the limit of their
skills. This is particularly reflected in the TopTech Like4Like category, where competitors will be asked to produce one hand of nail enhancements using every mediumavailable.
Top Tech Tip
& Overlay TheTopTechTip& Overlay category is designed for technicians who can competently complete a set ofTip& Overlay competition nails in 21
⁄2 hours, using your
chosen system(L&P, Gel orWrap), with one hand painted with red polish. The key thing in this area is your choice of tips or pinching technique to achieve consistent ‘C’ curve and straight sidewalls. Sizing the tip correctly is half the battle. Clarity of colour is
important too with crisp whites and pinks. Read the rules in the competitors’ pack to be sure what can and can’t be used.
Top Tech
Sculpt TopTech Sculpt requires you to complete a fully sculpted set of competition nails in 21
⁄2 hours, with one
hand painted with red
polish. This is a skill that many shy away frombut is actually so similar to tip and overlay it should look the
same. The reverse is the new popularmethod and it does give a fantastic crisp smile line and takes away the stress.

Newcomers Created for competition novices, youmust not have entered any professional competition previously to qualify for this category. Complete a set ofTip& Overlay competition nails in 21
⁄2 hours, using your
chosen system(L&P, Gel orWrap), with one hand painted with red polish. Smile lines are not required for this category and do not get any additional points. The contact area where blended will be judged.
Salon Nail
Challenge Showcase your salon work by creating a full set of salon nails in 11
⁄2 hours,
using any systemand any of the products you would use in the salon (French tips prohibited), with one hand painted with red polish. UV lamps and UV topcoatsmay be used with any systemon both hands. Base / top coats and polish drying productsmay be used on both hands. Sculpting forms, natural, white or clear tipsmay be used. Just like in a salon.
Showcase
Salon Nail Art
Challenge This competition challenges you to produce wearable Permanent Nail Art using coloured acrylics, gels and glitters etc and skills of encapsulation.Youmust complete yourmodel’s right hand prior to the competition, and complete their left hand during the competition. 3D can be applied to the ring finger and the thumb only as an optional choice in your design. Depending on the quality and your skills, 3D can win you points or lose themfor you, so only add if your design needs it.
Student Nail
Challenge Judges will be looking for the student who can produce the best set of nails to NVQ Level 2 standard demonstrating natural tip blending, choosing to work in one colour on two hands and then one hand painted with red polish. Students should be nominated by their college.

Photographic Judges will be looking for best ‘cover shot’which encapsulates this year’s theme Sex & the City - so let your imagination run wild! The winning image will be featured in Guild News and The Nail File.
Many competition photographs are lovely but often lose marks because they fail to meet the required criteria, remember it is a nail competition so let’s see how we can help you to gain more points and understand just how the scoring system works. Every theme chosen is
designed to give diversity to the imagination, as we don’t want all the pictures to be the same. Everyone’s interpretation of the theme varies which is why we like the step by steps to show where the ideas have come from in case it is not obvious to the judges.
Boxed Nail
Art Judges are looking for ten decorated nails presented in a plain display box, over which the theme of Sex & the City is
demonstrated. All boxes / cases can be up to a maximum of 12” x 6” (30cm x 15cm) in size (a standard size shoebox is perfect!).
Designs can feature any nail artistry techniques or mediums, including 3D, encapsulation or flat paint. You may not use pre designed
tips.Any 3D cannot exceed 1cm in any direction from the nail.
All work put on the nails must be created yourselves for the competition. You must provide a copy of a clearly written step-by-step of how you achieved your design and theme, which must be submitted with your entry. This shows us the techniques and authenticity if the art used.
