Jimmy Weekley | Continued approved plan. I’m hoping that resi- dents will begin to see the impor- tance of the plan and how it is going to be able to improve their lives and the reputation of the city and overall make us more of an inviting community to live in and to visit. Te community has to buy into it or it’s not really going to work for us.
RT Truman Waterfront is one of
two significant opportunities on the table for this fair community in the strategic plan. How do you feel about the progress being made? JWI have always said that we are about four to six years behind where we should be. I know every- one is excited and wanting to see something happen and hopefully in the next six months or so we can ac- tually see something happen.
RTTe other opportunity on the table is the ongoing negotiations with the Monroe County School Board about the potential possible joint use of a shared Glen Archer Elementary School on White Street as a city hall and a school district office. In the last referendum in No- vember, the question about whether or not the city should negotiate with the school board over this po- tential use passed overwhelmingly 70 percent – 30 percent. At first blush, what do you think of this idea? JWTe building looks like a City Hall. It’s a fabulous historic build- ing, and it gives us the opportunity
Lou Petrone | Continued religious law. Should the same be permitted? I say no. Beware! Attempts have been
made in Oklahoma and New Jer- sey. Now, Florida. A Florida judge intends to apply “Ecclesiastical Is- lamic Law” in evaluating an arbi- tration decision involving a
to recycle that building once the school has left and be able to keep the life in that building by the use of a city hall. It’s a fabulous loca- tion. It’s practically in the middle of the island, and there will be plenty of parking for visitors that come to city hall.
RT Is there anything in your mind that would sink this deal? JWWe’re looking at numbers right now, and if those numbers came back to where it was going to be, a big expense to the city could sink the deal. If it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of $30 million we have to look at Plan B, which would be to rebuild on Angela Street. I would like to see us be able to have some kind of joint partici- pation in developing that building. It would bring life to White Street. Businesses would start opening up around there and some of the va- cant offices would start getting used. Tere are a lot of opportuni- ties with the surrounding areas for businesses to be able to bring in businesses that would complement city hall. It also gives us a revenue source for being able to provide a parking location for visitors. Tere are opportunities on both ends of the street.
RT I’m hearing you say that even if this comes in a little bit more ex- pensive now, that doesn’t kill the deal if we save money in going for- ward into the future.

mosque, former trustees, present trustees and $2.2 million. Pay attention. Vigilance is re-
quired. Everyone is welcome to the United States. Once here, however, everyone must live by the same set of laws. Te laws of the United States. One standard for all! e
