Richard Tallmadge | RTWhat kind of a timeline are we looking at before a final draft of the Strategic Plan will be presented to the city commission and our community?
Jimmy Weekley | JWTe final draft will be presented to the com- mission in May. It corresponds with the time the city puts together the budget, at which time we can look at recommendations within the plan and see what items we should start planning through the budget process of doing. (Jimmy Weekley is local businessman, owner of Fausto’s and former mayor of Key West.)
RT Did you use the 2004 strategic plan as background and a starting point? JWTis is a whole new volume of effort. Tey looked at that plan, as well as some plans from other com- munities around the country. Te committee put a lot of effort into this. Tey looked at the chamber’s 20/20 vision that was done a num- ber of years ago and a visitor/resi- dential plan we had previously done. Tey gathered a lot of infor- mation from a lot of different re- sources that were available to them with different plans of different or- ganizations. Tey digested all of that and worked through that in coming up with the plan they’re presenting now. It has six different areas of recommendations to look
at, including environmental, the economy, quality of life and trans- portation. Te plan will help the city government, as well residents, visitors and businesses in the com- munity be able to plan the future of Key West over the next five years.
RTWe as a community have this penance of doing this kind of thoughtful work and effort, but we tend not to do anything about it. Do you have a strategy to make sure that does not happen to this particular piece of work? JWI am committed to seeing that does not happen. I have expressed a number of times that I do not want this to become another plan that sits up on a shelf somewhere col- lecting dust and never gets imple- mented. Let’s make this become a living document that we look at on every issue to see how it impacts our strategic plan, to see how it complements the strategic plan, and to move the city ahead over the next five years. Some of the ele- ments will not happen in a year, it may take a number of years in which to accomplish a particular goal, but we have to take that first step, and the first step for me is to look at what we can do immedi- ately to get this plan in motion. It may take six months or a year to ac- complish, but let’s get it done and find a way to show the citizens that we are moving forward from this Continued
