Waiting for Whales in San Ignacio Lagoon
Lewmar has fused its legendary quality with state of the art technology to offer the most advanced winch range ever; the EVO.
Lewmar believes in evolution not revolution – We have been evolving and
improving winch technology for almost half a century.
Customer Focused We visited San Ignacio Lagoon, one of the three primary
lagoons where the grey whales come each year to birth and mate. Took some great shots, including the one in which you see one of your new readers checking out the magazine. Thought you and the staff would get a chuckle from it. The boat was moving and obviously I had the focus more on the whale. Enjoy the pictures. My wife Pam is wearing the pink long sleeved shirt and
the pink visor. She seemed to be the “whale magnet”, and they came to her side of the boat more than the other side. The male grey whale is about 39-40’ long, maybe 30 tons
when mature. Female is 45-46’ long and roughly 35 tons. You can tell the older ones by the barnacles on them. Younger ones, especially babies, are still very smooth. We went out with Kuyima Whale Watching. There were
8 of us in the 20’ boat), plus the driver. Every one of us got to touch the whales. An unforgettable experience. The drivers are not allowed to “chase” the whales – so we got close, then waited for them to come to the boat. They do, and rise up to see us, and seem to like being “petted”. Go figure!

This certainly demonstrates how truly intelligent these magnificent creatures are.
Racing Sailors liked the alloy, needle-peened finish of our winches. Their only request was that they’d like it in black. The good news is we have it in black, grey and chromed bronze finish.
Cruising Sailors confirmed they want a proven quality winch that could be serviced without any tools, they wanted to be able to put the winch together themselves, and they also wanted a reliable and predictable grip.
With many sailors only chartering boats for a few days a year, safety is key in any new developments. We have included some simple safety features; the direction arrow which means all your crew load the line on (feed) the winch correctly and a flush top, both make sailing more fun for the entire family.
