World of Spas editor Jo Foley looks at what is new, innovative and healing in the world of spas

EDITOR’S LETTER

While we may recognise everything is cyclical, it still comes as a surprise when it actually happens. For instance, when examining the new spa trends for 2011 (see pages 48-49), I realised salt was being whole-heartedly welcomed back into the arms of well-being. For some years now we have been

warned about the dangers of salt – how it affected our health, our blood pressure – and told to avoid it at all costs, while a host of low-sodium foods were introduced into our diets. But that was putting salt INTO the

body. What has come around is the healing aspect of salt when applied TO the body – witness the therapeutic effect of bathing in the Dead Sea, which is the saltiest place on earth. But then remember back to your childhood; if playing at the seaside you fell and grazed your knee, your mother immediately sent you into the piercing (and healing) powers of the wave; if you had a sore throat, you gargled with warm, salty water; if you felt nauseous, your grandma made you swallow the stuff – and it worked its magic. There are so many of those old tradi- tions which are now creeping back into use. Best of all, they’re fully natural.

GLUTEN FREE

SPAs World of

Many of us are dismissive of food aller- gies, yet, while some are food faddishness, many more are for real. Take celiac dis- ease – an allergic reaction to foods which contain wheat, barley, rye and many related species. Such an allergy can make life a misery for sufferers, yet there is noth- ing new about it, a knowledge of it first ap- peared in the first century in a manuscript written by a Greek doctor called Arcteaus. How appropriate then that, two millen- nia later, Greek company ALDEMAR HOTELS is offering gluten-free menus. You can find them at the Royal Mare in Crete and Royal Olympian in the Peloponnese, both of which also have thalassotherapy spas. Just tell the hotels when you book and your menus – and peace of mind – will be gluten free. More info: www.aldemarhotels.com

DIAMONDS ’N TURQUOISE 

The diamonds are in the facial at the CORAL REEF CLUB in Barbados; the turquoise is, of course, the Caribbean. Spoil yourself when you get there with their anti-ageing and lifting facial, which incorporates cleansing, mask, serums and a serious facial massage. Feel younger, look younger. For the rest of your stay, enjoy the Thermal Spa Garden and daily yoga classes. All that and the sunshine, too. More info: www.coralreefbarbados.com

SPOOKY AND BORIS

A new type of wellness centre has just opened within minutes of Frinton on Sea. The LifeHouse is a spa with rooms – a new construction full of light and air, with glass- enclosed corridors, polished concrete floors and a place where every treatment room has access to light, instead of being encased in darkness. It certainly does lift the spirits! There is also a huge fitness area, a great mani-pedi room and a relaxation chamber sporting zero-gravity chairs so you can relax with your feet way above your head. Best of all, it has a glorious historic garden that is gradually being restored and

revived by a serious garden historian, Jan, and his amazing bouncy Jack Russell, Boris, who believes he is the lord of the manor. In between, there are facials, wraps, scrubs and the signature two-hour Oriental Bathing Experience. You can’t fail to relax. The final flourish is the centre’s own shaman – a serious healer called Moon. More info: www.lifehouse.co.uk or 01255 860050.
