on, quick-off feature of SureFire’s X200 and X300 lights. One problem with rail guns, how-

ever, is that they don’t fit standard concealment holsters. While the rail gun fit readily in my BLACKHAWK! SERPA, which I often wear in the field, my carry gun spends most of its time under a suit coat, where a SER- PA won’t do. I’ve been impressed with holstermaker Matt Del Fatti’s work for several years now, after he made me a belt holster that would let me effectively conceal an STI-based .45 with a light rail — no mean feat, con- sidering my 32" waist. I subsequently ordered an identical holster for my Novak carry gun, and it’s been my daily rig for over 2-1/2 years now. Made from black, rough-side-out

leather, Del Fatti’s SLP holster has a belt slot near the tail end of the hol- ster and a loop near the front, and is seriously well-made; it’s double- stitched in the important places, and triple-stitched in others. In addition to regular concealed carry, I’ve worn the holster during classes at Gunsite and Thunder Ranch, where it per- formed beautifully. After all that hard use, the pistol still “snaps” au- dibly into place when it’s holstered. It doesn’t show scuffs, tucks the pistol in close for concealment, and is very fast. Del Fatti has a significant wait- ing list — when he’s taking orders — but it’s worth it. Lest all of that sound like a paid advertisement, let me tell you I paid retail for the SLP, and was very happy to do it. Colt’s introduction of the rail

gun was an important step in bring- ing them back to the forefront of the 1911 market that they created, and the work at Novak’s refined the basic pistol into an efficient, versatile de- fensive weapon. It’s rare that custom guns can be made to exceed the qual- ity of the components with which you begin, and the rail gun provided an excellent foundation for the work of one of the modern masters. *
