trigger housing area has the most mass in the pistol frame and shows the majority of the wild coloring the case hardening process is popular for. The frontstrap of the frame and the mainspring housing are scored 25 LPI for secure feel in the hand and the checkering on the pistol is re- lieved clean and smooth at the top of the strap with no run-over cuts. The opening for the magazine at the bot- tom of the frame is deeply chamfered with a straight edge equally placed on each side of the well. To fit the web of the shooters hand, the grip safety is fit smoothly, then blended deep into the tang of the grip with a high arch in towards the frame and long sweep on the tail end to prevent hammer bite. The safety catch, beavertail, maga- zine catch and slide stop are all in tra- ditional blue to match the upper end on the pistol. The slide is what really “tops off”

the build on the Centennial model. Best of all is the hand-cut engraving done in a scroll layout. In the center of the pattern is “Volkmann Cus- tom” in cursive on the left side and the word “Centennial” in the same script just ahead of the ejection port. All the lettering is carved deep and

then flush inlayed with the classic 24-karat yellow gold. A double-lined border encases each section of the de- sign between the cocking serrations. This elegant work is all complimented with the blued steel truly flattened on both sides by hand and then brightly polished for a mirror like effect to show the depth and detail of the hand carved art. The muzzle of the 1911 has the Volkmann logo on the recoil- spring plug that fits and blends seam- lessly to the over-sized stainless steel barrel bushing. The .45-caliber barrel is crowned flush with the original- style bushing for both accuracy and protection of the bore. The top of the slide is flattened and serrated for bet- ter sighting and the pistol comes with a Volkmann adjustable tritium night- sight set. Yellow tritium inserts, are present on each side of the wide notch of the rear sight that is machine and seated very low in the slide. A single contrasting green tritium insert is in the center of the front post, which is dovetailed and also pinned into the slide for strength. “I am giving the customer their

choice of selection in sights, grips, triggers and safety on each build to satisfy each buyer. These pistols are

available only during the anniversary year in 2011, which makes them a truly limited run treasure.” Luke Volkmann I think the Centennial will truly

be a treasure. The pistol might be as close as I have seen to Luke fulfilling his mission statement of “One Mas- terpiece at a Time.” Volkmann’s 1911s are all good, but this is an example of art done in steel. Whether treasure or a flat out defensive-fighting pistol … Volkmann should always have your consideration if you are thinking of buying a 1911 pistol. *
