Art work in steel; Bowen’s conversions of revolver and general work is beyond state of the art … Bowen Classic Arms work is true art work in action.

many of the revolvers were Colts and over the years, Cimarron Arms and Ruger made strong inroads into the single-action system of operations well. Never for a moment doubt that the Single Action Army isn’t a viable defense tool, I have shot and carried concealed the SAA and it has worked well. Is it the best self-defense hand- gun? This point is arguable, but the fact is that a 250-grain lead projectile at 800 fps does have the potential to stop or change a fight — that point you can take to the bank. Old revolvers from the 1900s to

the 1960s, like the Colt and Smith & Wesson 1917 guns, the Colt New “Service” Double Action models, as well as the Smith Wesson Model of 1950 .45 Army and the 1955 Model .45 Target are all still viable defense guns. I can think of many people I know who still have and use these guns for personal protection. They are big guns that will provide a solid hit on target. It may not stop a fight but the big .45 caliber projectile will do as good, if not better than most handguns made.

New Revolvers From the 1960s to the 1990s there

was sort of a lull; those people who knew, got it and they had the big-bore guns and liked them. Generational wise, many of the young people didn’t know or care about the .45 as the blog masses consumed polymer and high capacity everything. In the late 1990s, some smart guys

set the foundation for a resurrection of the old-style big-caliber guns by introducing

the Smith & Wesson

“Classic” series of guns. The then president of Smith & Wesson, Roy Cuny

WWW.AMERICANHANDGUNNER.COM and Antonio Miele almost 63

single handedly brought the big guns back starting the test with a .44 caliber Model 21 revolver. Test proven, they brought forth the Model 22 .45-caliber fixed- sight revolver bearing an original square-butt-type grip. The guns sold very well and the resurrection began and continues to this day. The Smith & Wesson Model 325 Thunder Ranch Special

is

the latest of the new-age revival in that it uses high-tech metals and technology. From a tactical application standpoint, the TRS revolver has a light rail making it a crossover revolver from street carry to home defense, all with the simple snap on of a SureFire X300 to the front of the barrel. Today, in just the Smith & Wes-

son catalog alone the revolver list- ings show a Model 625, a Perfor- mance Center 625, the 325 with light rail, a Model 25, Model 22 and Model of 1917 all in .45 cali- ber. I have a feeling the .45 caliber and the revolver, no matter how archaic they might appear, are both here to stay for a while. *
