A Volkmann Commander-size pis- tol with the bobbed butt, shown in the Volkmann “Package” format.

have ever shot that the trigger fits the glass rod description. The whole pis- tol fits together perfectly and finish is above excellent.

Small Volkmann “Combatant” I reviewed Volkmann’s version of

the Commander-size 1911, the Com- batant Carry model. As tested, it was in a hard-chrome-finish format and it had the bob job done on the rear of the pistol frame. The bobbed frame thing is always intriguing and I have had people swear at it, and by it, over the years. For me personally, it’s a take it or leave it gig and if I bought a gun from scratch, I would pass on the

modification. The premise I think, is that it reduces the “print” of the pis- tol while being carried concealed … I guess on some people this would work, maybe not on others. I also think, it might have a bit of the “cool” factor going for it if the truth was ac- tually known. That said, the Combat- ant version is a very smooth-running, smaller-stature pistol — if you want one — and at the same time, it is a large-bore, solid defense pistol.

The “Centennial” I saw the first one of these 1911s

that Luke built to give to his father as gift … very cool stuff. This pistol is a bit of an oddity, as most of the

guns that Volkmann builds are pretty straightforward defensive tools. This Centennial model strays a bit from the norm, but to be honest it is a very cool pistol. This special pistol is described as

“The Centennial Edition,” starts with two carbon-steel forgings with CNC machining for precise measurement and tolerance, these will become the slide and frame of the pistol. The lower of

this pistol is meticulously

polished by hand; this insures no tool marks will be evident on the finished product. The finished frame is case hardened by Doug Turnbull Resto- rations to give the pistol a seriously nostalgic and collectible facade. The

Volkmann Combatant Carry pis- tol bears bobbed-grip reduction.
