World Routes is tourist attraction T
The Berlin event is set to attract a record number of tourism authorities in 2011.
ourism authorities have been taking a far more active role in the air service development process, particularly since the onset of the global economic crisis.
The fi nancial gloom forced airports to work more closely with their tourism partners in order to maintain existing traffi c and to attract new routes for the future, in times of economic uncertainly.
This trend meant that there were over 75 tourism organisations at World Routes in Vancouver in 2010 and this number is set to increase again this year. The ability for an airline to be able to have meetings with an airport representative as well as a tourism offi cial has been
described by one route development executive at a carrier as the ‘Golden Triangle’ that allows business cases to be rigorously explored. Of course, the benefi t of meeting with airlines directly and working collaboratively has huge benefi ts for tourism and economic development authorities too. Cathy Tull, senior vice president of marketing for the
Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority, says: “The non-gaming economic impact of one British Airways fl ight from London to Las Vegas is currently $91 million annually. This fl ight was a result of attending previous Routes events.”
AND THE WINNER IS… For the fi rst time, tourism authorities will be recognised for
their efforts in and commitment to air service development with the Tourism Award, which will be presented at World Routes in Berlin. This new award is open to tourism authorities that take an active role in air service development in their cities and regions. The award will go to the tourism authority that has demonstrated excellence in route development. To enter, or for more information, contact Natasha Peck: +44 161 234 2711 or
