he Destination Briefi ngs held at Routes Tourism Mediterranean proved to be a real highlight with representatives from the


Ministries of Tourism and Culture in the Istria region of Croatia, Greece and Turkey, offering delegates real insight into their respective regions’ tourism industries and the ways in which they are working with their various stakeholders.

Demirel said he hoped Turkey would be seen as an “open air museum”, not only in terms of its vast historical and cultural attractions, but also for its range of holiday possibilities.Highlighting the vast array of activities on offer, which includes winter sports, such as skiing, Demirel said that extending the tourism season is a key objective.


Istria Regional Tourist Board Denis Ivosevic, managing director of Istria Regional Tourist Board, focused his briefi ng on the Istria region of Croatia. Ivosevic said the focus is not on tourist numbers, but rather on the quality of tourists’ experiences. He said the biggest challenge was ensuring collaboration with aviation stakeholders. The Ministry of Aviation has launched a programme of actively recruiting airlines and


has successfully obtained 64 new carrier agreements, to start this summer.


Greek Tourism Ministry


Christos Petreas, advisor to the deputy minister of Culture and Tourism for the Hellenic Republic, highlighted that there is “a new wind blowing on the government’s views of, and collaboration with, tourism”. Petreas highlighted that Greece is entering a new era of investment in tourism, illustrated by Ryanair’s entry into the market. Petreas said that Greece is working with the low-cost carriers and that “the door was always open, and the phone always answered”.
