WORDSfromReaders Winner! Letter of the Month
I have started to buy each issue of Adventure Kayak and love your publication. I am glad to say that my favourite kayak magazine is Canadian. One thing in the editorial coverage is missing though, and I am not sure why: folding kayaks. There is so much one could write about this type of kayak. But one of the most important things may be that they can be owned by people like me who don't have the space in or around a subur- ban house to store a hardshell kayak (at least I am not prepared to clutter my small garden with
Kayaking beats video games
I think you dealt with Mr. Johnston's letter in a very pos- itive manner (“Picture the future of kayaking,” Adventure Kayak V3 I1). As you described, the loppet scene is a great model for the kayaking world. Participation and community involve- ment is the focus, racing is for fun and a means to challenge yourself—a vehicle to personal growth. As for the cover photo (Adventure Kayak V2 I4), it was of a group of Windsor High School students developing kayaking skills for an upcoming overnight. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Where Mr. Johnston sees a crowd, I see a group of young kids about to embark on a great adventure that will instil in them greater confidence, self-worth and an appreciation of nature. Better that than mind-numbing video games.

In support of speed: Correction
We apologize to the race organizers and spon- sors of the Deep Cove Canoe & Kayak Centre’s Tuesday Night Race Series for incorrectly naming the race sponsor as Necky Kayaks (in “The Need for Speed,” Adventure Kayak V3 I1). Current Designs kayaks has been a key sponsor of the grassroots event since it started five years ago, along with Brooks Wetsuits, Aquabound Paddles, AIC Group of Funds, The Raven Pub, North Shore Athletics, First Mate Pet Foods and Elements Magazine. Deep Cove’s popular weekly races are the brainchild of racing veteran Dave Norona and are organized by General Manager Bob Putnam and other employees of the Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak Centre. —AK
a boat rack). Two years ago, a business associate pointed me in the direction of folding kayaks, having bought a Feathercraft earlier. Within four months, I had two Folbot kayaks (a single and a double) for my family of three. It opened a new world of enjoying nature to us. After all, “skin boats” are the original kayak and we live in a country that has a boating heritage in this seg- ment like no other place.
