SEEING the Digital Advantage
Digital Previewing to fine-tune exposure Exploring the ice formations along the shore of Lake Ontario in Prince Edward County near Wellington Ontario, I was fascinated by the contrast between the almost-black tones of the water and the whites of the wave-formed ice. Looking at the preview of the first image, I realized the great range of tones was fooling my light meter and causing the whites to overexpose. Underexposing by 1/3 of a stop in the second image revealed more detail in the snow and ice and brought richer colour to the sky.
Digital Previewing for when to add flash I went out on a cold November day for a paddle close to home on that urban classic, the Grand River between Glen Morris and Paris, Ontario. Being able to adjust your exposure and check the results on a digital camera’s LCD screen gives you the ability to really fine-tune your images. Thanks to digital previewing, I overcame the effect of strong backlighting from water reflections in image 1 by using fill flash in image 2.
