BC Parks jacks prices

Parking and camping fees are going up in many B.C. parks including popular sea kayak destinations Plumper Cove, Porteau Cove, Smuggler Cove, Newcastle Island, Pirate’s Cove and Wallace Island. The fee change is part of the province’s new user-pay system recommended by the Recreation Stewardship Panel, an independent body of recreation experts who reviewed B.C.’s park system. Fees will be collected by a caretaker onsite and used by the park operators to offset operating and maintenance costs within the park where they are collected, said John Furney of the province’s parks and protected areas office. Parks that were free last year are still free, Furney said. There are no plans to charge for overnight use in any other parks in the near future. Canoeing and Hiking Wild Muskoka: An Eco-Adventure Guide, by Hap Wilson

Hap Wilson applies his seasoned writing and artistic talents to reclaim Ontario’s cottage heart- land for the wild

wanderer. “Much of natural Muskoka was intact,” Wilson explains, “but

its charm was faltering in the wake of powerboats and jet-skis and the proliferation of golf courses and condo devel- opments.” Beautiful illustrations detail canoe, hik- ing and ski trails, plus kayak tours on the Georgian Bay coast and four large Muskoka lakes. For the soft-core pilgrim, Wilson has marked B&Bs. $19.95 Cdn from Boston Mills Press. 
