The Good Life
This gem of a house plan packs many amenities into a compact, energy smart package, and extends a high quality of life to outdoor spaces.

EARTH-SAVING IDEA
Do skylights save more energy (on lighting) than they lose on space heating? A few years ago the answer might have been no, but better glass technology has made skylights far more efficient. So the inclusion of two skylights to flood the family room with natural light is a “green” idea.

GREEN HIGHLIGHTS
A
The designer recommends a structure made of super insulating 6” structural insulated panels (SIPs).

B
Windows on the south elevation capture solar gain in winter, which is stored in the dark flooring of the family room. The windows are shaded by retractable awnings in summer.

C
The east-facing roof provides significant partially concealed area for both photovoltaic and water heating panels.

D
Baths include instant, on-demand hot water heaters, reducing energy waste.

E
Low-maintenance exterior materials—siding, decking, and roofing—reduce ongoing maintenance/painting impacts.

F
All faucets, fixtures, and appliances are Energy Star certified.

G
“Wind finder” cupola directs natural ventilation where needed.
