2010 Review

While the 2010 version of the Siena lacrosse team fell short of its ultimate goal of winning a second consecu- tive MAAC Tournament Championship and a return to the NCAA Tournament, the season was full of numerous successes for a program that continued to make a name for itself on the national stage. The Saints tied their program record with 12 wins and for a second straight year went a perfect 8-0 in the MAAC, running their regular-season unbeaten streak to a whopping 19 games heading into the 2011 season.

The Saints lost three of their first four to start the season, but their early record was indicative of how the team played. After dropping their season opener at Stony Brook, the Saints appeared in the national spot- light when they took on fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field on ESPNU. A big underdog, the Saints gave the Blue Jays all they could handle, as Hopkins sur- vived with a goal in the final minute to top the Saints, 8-7. While the Saints fell in heartbreaking fashion at the end, the game would serve as an impetus for the remain- der of the season.

The momentum took shape the very next time the Saints took the turf against bitter rival UAlbany. The Saints had come the closest they ever had in the Division I era to topping their crosstown rivals the year before in falling by a single goal the year before. Bryan Neufeld scored three straight second half goals and assisted on the game-winner as the Saints defeated UAlbany for the first time in the D-I era with a 13-12 victory, snapping a seven-game losing streak to the Danes.

While Siena would have a bit of a letdown and lose its next contest against Hartford, the reverberations from the UAlbany win carried over. The Saints hit their stride following their loss to the Hawks, toppling Saint Joseph’s 14-8 which would serve as the start of a four- game winning streak. While that period of success would be interrupted with a double overtime defeat at Binghamton on Apr. 2, Siena would surge to win 10 of its final 11 games heading into the MAAC Tournament.

Neufeld, who scored 41 goals, along with Ryan Duggan who led the team with 51 points, paced the high- powered offensive attack while arguably the best goalie in MAAC history Brent Herbst continued to put up impressive numbers and held four opponents to five goals or less. As a result, the Saints entered the MAAC Tournament on a six-game winning streak and as the
