Where do you live and why? We moved to a new house in Beeston, a couple of miles west of Nottingham just over a year ago. Its handy for the office and more importantly a two minute walk to the golf course.
A Q
Which data centre/IT companies have you worked at and how long for?
Prior to setting up 2bm back in 2002 I was sales director at Comrac.
A Q
What is your life philosophy? Without wishing to get too deep I try to enjoy the moment and believe you should never have any regrets
A Q
Who do you admire in your professional life? There are a couple of my clients who I have a lot of admiration for but I won’t embarrass them in public. So I had better say my business partner Jason Preston. We’ve known each other since we were kids and he’s someone I know I can rely on. We have different skill sets I suppose but I think you need that when running a company.
A Q
Windows, Linux or UNIX? Got to be Windows for me! I can’t imagine life without it.
A Q
Virtualisation – are there any downsides?
Selfishly yes – it means my customers won’t be buying as many computer racks
A Q
What data centre technology development has made the most difference to your job – and how? The ability to accurate monitor power to help deliver tangible improvements in data centre efficiency and highlight the benefits of good design and build.
A Q
Where were the last 3 places you went on holiday? I treated myself and the family to
A Q
two weeks in Barbados in January – great place to relax and enjoy the weather. Prior to that it was a golfing trip to Portugal and
prior to that what should have been a week in Murcia (Spain). Ended up being more like three weeks thanks to the volcanic ash cloud!
What do you think are your greatest strengths in the workplace? Listening to both my customers and the 2bm team! You’re only as good as the people you employ and I’d like to think I am a compassionate boss which hopefully explains why we’ve only had two people leave the company since it was set up eight years ago.
A Q
What are your weaknesses? My golfing mates would probably say my biggest weakness is three foot putts!
A Q
What one possession would you take to a desert island? (no phones or blackberrys!)
It would be a toss up between my pitching wedge or the bar I have just had built at home.
A Q
Which one person would you most like to meet (alive or dead), and what would you ask them? Bill Shankly – please help!
A Q
A Q
What are your current projects? 2010 was another great year for the
company, one that exceeded all expectations. A lot of our new business has come from data centre design and build projects, and we’ve just heard that we’ve won a £1.2m scheme for a utility company that is going to keep us busy.
Mark King is the Managing Director of 2bm Ltd
