Hosting & Colocation
available, without affecting existing customers’ implementations. Sensible forward planning of space and infrastructure make upgrading an easy task. DCS: And are there certain industry sectors into which you are looking to expand?
GM: The company continued to see the benefits from our market segmentation and ‘communities of interest’ approach to selling. For example, in the financial services segment, our Financial Hub proposition – dedicated areas in selected facilities that meet the stringent requirements of ultra-low-latency electronic trading – has been successfully deployed in our London, Paris, Frankfurt, Stockholm and Zurich data centres. By attracting financial services companies that normally trade or partner with each other, we enable our customers to deploy quickly and improve the performance of their trading applications. We now have over 200 financial services businesses as customers.
Our other core market segments showing growth are the digital media and cloud service provider, carrier/Internet exchange and enterprise sectors.
DCS: Do you see the emergence of DC players from the services, telcos and large IT corporations as a significant threat – or will they all go to market using your DC facilities?
GM: No, we do not see them as a significant threat. Significant barriers to entry exist in the carrier-neutral colocation market, including scarcity of adequate locations, power availability, the cost associated with building data centres, time and resources required to develop communities of interest, and the difficulty of establishing a reputable brand, as well as the inherently high switching costs for customers and carriers.
DCS: And is the utility model – The Cloud and beyond – an achievable, desirable and the ultimate end goal for the IT industry?
GM: Certainly. Increasingly users require the most effective, reliable and efficient type of delivery of their services. If a new disruptive technology, such as the Cloud, can enable this, then both users and businesses will reap major benefits.
However, whether this is the end goal or just a significant step in the continuing development of the IT industry is yet to be seen.
