virtualised servers usually being remote from the business, at some stage all data will be passing over the network. In-flight encryption should therefore be a major consideration when developing a virtualised security strategy. In other words, securing the data in a virtualised environment whilst running an unsecured network is a bit like locking all the windows in a house, but leaving the front door open.”

Given all that Steve has talked about, it’s no surprise that Ciena has a significant focus on the data centre right now in terms of developing products and an overall strategy for this market. Product-wise, a recent introduction is noteworthy.

“One relatively new addition to our portfolio that is of particular interest to the data centre space is the Enterprise

Services Optimisation Module (ESOM), which comes on the ActivSpan 4200 platform and provides efficient, flexible and application-intelligent wide area networking services for enterprise applications – like data replication and Ethernet transport,” says Steve. “One interesting feature of ESOM is that it can “virtualise” the network bandwidth, allowing for better alignment of an enterprise’s applications.

ESOM bandwidth virtualisation eliminates the need to “hard wire” a specified amount of bandwidth per application, or “tunnel” data blindly end-to-end. Instead, bandwidth can be dynamically re-configured by changing the percent allocations for different services running on the module, maybe to accommodate a specific time of day, or end of month, heavier than normal

transmission, and efficiently adapt to changing requirements.”

As 2011 gathers momentum, what else can we expect to see from Ciena, fresh from its momentous 2010 business successes? Steve explains: “2010 was a transformational year for Ciena – in acquiring the Nortel Metro Ethernet Networks assets, we took a bold, strategic move that significantly improved the market position of the company. In 2011, we will be focused on leveraging the solid foundation that has been built by delivering on the value of the Ciena-MEN combination. We’re working on completing the integration of our portfolio, while exploiting our industry position and technology leadership to take a bigger share of the market. We’re also bringing new industry-leading platforms to market.”
