The Event
A one-of-a-kind experience crafted by legendary filmmaker Ken Burns and Tauck on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, the Civil War Event brings guests together in the historic epicenter of the conflict, Washington, DC, on a single departure – five days of themed sightseeing and exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime gala experiences, May 22 – 26, 2011 – including a keynote address by and a personal visit with Ken Burns himself on May 24. Some 300 like-minded travelers will experience the stories and events that define the Civil War – and by extension, our nation – in the places where they actually happened... through the eyes of a master storyteller and one of the country’s foremost authorities on the subject... taking their understanding of the war and its legacies to a deeper level.
By day, small groups of 30 guests visit sites handpicked by Ken Burns to tell the story of the conflict. In the evening, all come together for three gala events hosted by the Tauck family, with private, insider access to three of Washington’s most important museums: the National Building Museum, built as the Pension Building for Civil War veterans; the National Archives, site of the keynote address by Ken Burns; and the National Portrait Gallery & Smithsonian American Art Museum, used for Lincoln’s 2nd inaugural ball in March, 1865.
