Many shared the view that the finish in the dark was a bit nerve-racking, with some boats not using navigation lights and boats having a hard time spotting the pin end of the finish line. Results were delayed because the race committee was unable to see sail numbers in the dark due in part to the blinding lights from the pier, but thanks to their persistence and accurate recording of finish times, they were able to match missed sail numbers with finish times. Jon Cruse, on Kahuna, succinctly
summed up the race, “The variety of conditions required everyone to stay on top of things. And it was good to get out and sail to kick off the New Year.”

Shilshole Bay YC/ Port Madison YC Challenge Cup February 12
The SBYC-PMYC Challenge Cup is
coming out of retirement. It’s been pried loose from the trophy case at SBYC, the dust & tarnish has been rubbed off, the engravers have been notified to ready themselves and new adrenaline is beginning to flow. First ran in 1974, the Challenge Cup was ran between these two yacht clubs only, with only current members boats eligible to race and a minimum of three boats from each Yacht Club. For 18 years this cup has been coveted by SBYC. A new deed of gift has been established requiring a minimum of two years between races. The 2011 SBYC/PMYC Challenge Cup will be run in conjunction with the Snowbird Series.
