Finally, It’s All Happening on the Left Coast

Last month we talked about how exciting it was that we were getting some new models of sailboats coming into town. The manufacturer’s new creations are displayed at Annapolis and other eastern shows, but we usually don’t see them out here for a couple years, if at all, in our area. That changed at last month’s Seattle Boat Show/Boats Afloat Show where Seattle area sailors and other traveling boating aficionados, were treated to the latest and greatest offerings by some of the manufacturers. This is great for us up here in the northwest corner and brings a great deal of buzz to the new season.

And, with the announcement that the America’s Cup will, indeed, be sailed in San Francisco Bay in 2013 (see article page 48), it means Northwest sailors can just jump on I-5 and go see sailing’s greatest show on earth, as boats rocket around a course at speeds unheard of for a sailboat, at least until the last DoG (Deed of Gift) race. It is funny that the only other time the AC has been on the west coast, another DoG race, it too was a catamaran show, albeit only one. This time, however, it will be the real deal, exemplified by the return of Louis Vuitton sponsoring the challenger series. With all the new technology they’ve been trying out to bring the race “into your living room,” it should be truly an extraordinary event both on and off the water. It must be all that clean, green living we tout out here on the Left Coast, that’s making our cups (no pun intended) runnest over. Now, with all this happening, is it too much to expect to have a three month, 80° summer, with 8-12 knots of wind between 10 AM and 3 PM? I suppose it is, but what the heck, we’re on a roll.

On Thursday, March 3, 48° North will once again host our annual meeting with the Coast Guard, for race committees and those planning on-the-water events. It’s an informal evening of information exchange to assure everyone is on the same page as to what is needed for and by the Coast Guard regarding your race or event. Primarily, we’ll talk about event permits, deadlines, and safety. As many people will be new to their race committees this year, it is your time to ask any questions you might have about permits, VTS or other concerns. This is always an excellent get together and demonstrates how we’re all working together for fun and safety on the water.

48° North’s Annual Meeting with the Coast Guard Thursday, March 3, 6-9PM at the 48° North offices, right behind West Marine at Shilshole. For further information call Rich at 206-789-7350 or email: richard@48north.com
