On Great White, we had spent most


of the race alone, but as we closed in on the Duwamish Head Light, suddenly numerous voices filled the bay and boats were seemingly everywhere - two were close enough to reach out and touch. Within two boat lengths of the mark, we were sandwiched between two boats. We couldn't come down and begin rounding the mark without hitting the boat to our port, which was forcing us to remain up. The boat to our starboard yelled for us to come down, coming within a foot or so of making contact, apparently unaware of the tight situation to our port. After rounding the Duwamish Head


mark, it was a drag race due west across the Sound to Blakely Rock. Some boats were sailing far north of the Rock. Others, like Lunch Box, turned down from us and setttled into a southern lane that brought them eye-squintingly close to Blakely Rock. Throughout this leg the wind was steady at about 6-8 knots southwesterly. The rounding at Blakely Rock was


uneventful. Boats were spread out all over the Sound. Some headed to the east shore. The wind lightened and became more southerly and quite shifty. It remained this way from the Rock to about Three Tree Point. Gardner-Brown’s

perspective from Dulcinea was shared by many. “From Blakely Rocks to the finish, who knows, the incoming tide was no help. The right hand side along Vashon was glass and wrong. The middle had cats paw wind indications, but turned out to be not good. The left hand side which looked like glass to us seemed to allow for huge gains with some boats able to use their spinnakers.” The close competition in Division D


kept the crew on their toes, particularly in this wind hole. Charlie Macaulay, of the G&S39 Absolutely, explained their tactics on this tricky and final, leg to the finish. “We stayed west early and then went east on a heading zephyr that was dying. We didn’t want to be stuck in the middle when the wind died completely, but were trying to protect the west because we thought that was where the new breeze would come from. When we got back east, the J/105 Tantivy was ahead, but we tacked to leeward of them, protecting the west. That worked out for us against Tantivy, but not so good against the two J/35s, Melange and Grace E. They protected farther west than us and got by us. Tantivy dug in even closer to shore and got caught in a couple of huge holes. Melange drove over us and we tacked to clear our air just

north of Three Tree Point. That put us to the west of Grace E and we picked them off, but Melange got their own private breeze along shore and jetted out about a quarter mile ahead. We then saw the wind filling relatively solidly from the south and decided to just cover the boats behind us and let Melange go. I think we got a bit closer, but they still finished comfortably ahead of us. We were second with Grace E behind us. Not sure where the rest of the fleet was at that point, but we got at least one boat between us and Tantivy, and that was the important thing for the series.” Bob King provided a thorough


overview of Class C on his Olson 40, String Theory. ”We had a seasoned crew onboard; a number of us had sailed the race over 20 times. Our race strategy divided the course into four legs; Des Moines to Alki, Alki to Duwamish Head, Duwamish to Blakely Rock, and to Finish. Our starting strategy was a "Vander- Powley", a timed downwind approach on port tack, with the intention of being at the pin at the gun. We were able to sneak across the line near the pin on port, immediately below some approaching starboard tack/jibe-set starters. Leg One strategy was to sail rhumb line, or, slightly to leeward thereof. We looked
