STUDENT SPOTLIGHT LET THE STUDENT TELL THE STORY

TERESA SHEEHEY joined Osher in Fall 2008, shortly after retiring from the county library. Her daughter was in the Marine Corps at that time, stationed in Okinawa for two years, so Teresa found herself with free time, for the first time, in a long time. The first class she took was an art history class with Eugene Marseglia, and she was so impressed with that class that she began to take other classes in the ensuing semesters. Teresa found that becoming an annual member worked best for her because it allowed her the freedom to take as many

classes as she wanted each semester. When asked what she enjoys about Osher Teresa said, “When you go through college the first time you have to take required courses for your degree, but Osher allows you to pursue new interests, which for me have been history, music, and art appreciation. I volunteer at a food bank in Vista and at Navy Relief at Camp Pendleton, and I plan my volunteer schedule around my Osher classes.” Teresa has served as an Osher classroom ambassador on numerous occasions and does a fabulous job!

MARTHA COX enrolled in her first Osher class in 2007, actually her first three classes. She was instantly hooked. Over the past four years she has enjoyed many engaging Osher courses and events. One event she especially enjoyed was the trip to the Getty Villa in Malibu with instructor Jack Williams. Martha describes her experience with Osher as “enjoyable, illuminating and thought-provoking”; she goes on to share “My classmates are fantastic people – well-traveled, well-read and engaging. The people you meet and share your Osher time with

are one of the best parts of Osher – people you enjoy having lunch with after class. It is terrific that classes are held throughout North County at convenient locations – that’s a real plus.” Martha is a great proponent of the Osher program and has shared her experience with many others, encouraging them to join. She states “The quality of Osher classes simply cannot be beat, and I have talked about them endlessly to others. As friends and former colleagues retire, I’m elated to introduce them to Osher”. Martha has served as a classroom ambassador and on on various committees. Currently she is serving as a key member of our Garden Planning Committee.
