GreetinGs from our new Dean

Osher Lifelong Learning is an integral part of CSUSM and is housed in Extended Learning. I became the Dean of Extended Learning in July and I met many of you at the Taste of Osher in August shortly after I arrived from Maryland. What an exciting event! Your enthusiasm was infectious. I come to you from Towson University in Towson Maryland. We had an active Osher program there and I was instrumental in the development of resources and relationships within the University and community at large. For example, I advocated for

designated classrooms and convenient parking for our Osher students. I am impressed with the scope of your program and see you as a model for “bringing the program to the people” throughout the community. You may not know that our University received the prestigious Carnegie status as a result of this community outreach. The logistics involved in servicing 11 locations throughout North County and Temecula has its challenges but I understand the value to you and I fully support it. In addition, I would like to encourage you to visit our campus and feel a part of our “Cougar Community”. We are excited about the Osher Garden Project and hope you will join in on the fun of creating your special spot on our campus. Since my arrival, I have been working closely with the deans of our various colleges to identify potential faculty for your lectures and ongoing classes. I believe wholeheartedly in lifelong learning and I promise to advocate for you every chance I get! I welcome your input and expertise. Stop by anytime!

I also had the pleasure of joining in on your annual volunteer appreciation brunch and was touched by all the friendly faces, your dedication and camaraderie. I wish to take this opportunity to publically thank you for your part in the success of this vital, evolving program. I look forward to working closely with you on various projects such as the Osher Garden, which will serve to solidify relationships with our University, encourage cross generational interaction, and give you a permanent place to gather for fun and joyful learning.

Sincerely,

messaGe from the Director

Here at OLLI we know our students care about quality education; they are intense, self motivated learners who never miss a beat. You come to us with very high expectations and we strive to meet these expectations by recruiting the most talented and dynamic instructors available. In addition to our on-going classes, we have 36 distinguished lecturers who present a “stand alone” lecture on timely topics in Carlsbad, Rancho Santa Fe, and now Temecula. We continue to “bring the program to the people” in 11 locations throughout North County and Temecula. Our curriculum is thoughtfully planned each term, taking into consideration the wishes and requests of our members. Here at Osher our motto is always “You wish it – We dish it!”

Whether you are new to Osher or a returning member we wish to thank you for supporting this valuable program. We are happy to report that our membership jumped by over 20% in the fall thanks to all of you who have helped us spread the word. We are inching closer to our goal of 1000 members and the endowment that will ensure our continued growth! As always, we owe our success and growth in large part to our dedicated volunteers and instructors. Without their many talents and contributions we would never be able to accomplish so much.

Sincerely, Mike Schroder, Dean
