Museum Masterpieces: the Louvre with Professor Richard Brettell
Take an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s greatest museums. This series begins with an overview of the Louvre’s colorful history as royal palace, art academy, and national showcase. Then you’ll explore some of the most beautiful and renowned examples from the museum’s remarkable collection of European paintings from the late medieval period through the early 19th century. You’ll browse world-famous masterpieces and hidden gems as they come alive in luminous, full-color illustrations. What is the mystery behind Mona Lisa’s smile? What does Jusepe Ribera’s painting of the Clubfooted Boy seem to say about the proper subject of art? From the art novice to the expert, everyone will find something to enlighten and surprise. Whether you’re new to the world of art, or a long-time admirer of the masters of European painting, you’ll be inspired and enchanted by Museum Masterpieces.

Farouk Al-Nassar,Ph.D. is an Iraqi born American. He is the President of the San Diego World Affairs Council. In his capacity as Executive Director of Iraqi Operations for a fortune 500 San Diego Company, he was responsible a myriad of duties including the management and execution of contracts signed by his employer with the U.S. Government. He oversaw government contracts in the areas of information technology, telecommunications and Global Service Management. He was also responsible for exploring new business opportunities toward the construction and development of Iraq, and to assess the geopolitical environment in Iraq and the region.

Manuel Arriaga,Ph.D., received a Master’s in Philosophy from Ateneo de Manila University and a doctorate in Philosophy from Duquesne University. He is an Associate Professor at Cal State San Marcos. He also is the author of Philosophy and Justice: Levinas and the Modernism-Postmodernism Debate recently published by Lexington Books.

DouglasR. Barker M.A., is a professional art historian, educator and metaphysical researcher who lived for fourteen years in Europe and has taught over one hundred courses in art history at a number of colleges and universities, most recently as a full-time instructor at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. He has been an enthusiastic researcher of the megaliths and has visited many of them in a num- ber of different countries. His particular expertise is in relating the history of art to the evolution of consciousness in the Western world.
Bobbi Boes holds a M.F.A. in Film and Screenwriting from UCLA and a B.A. in Literature and Creative Writing and has teaching experience in all three levels of the California higher education system. She is a recipient of a SAMUEL GOLDWYN WRITING AWARD for her screenplay, Sacramento. Boes also received the BRIDGET AND BOB COLLEARY AWARD for Best Romantic Comedy, as well as the STEPHEN GERSHENSON and a SCREENWRITING DIVERSITY Award for the screenplay, White Trash Cooking. Half Life, the tale of Irene Curie, was a finalist in the SLOAN competition. Boes currently works as a script doctor on independent projects and teaches Screenwriting, Film & Video.
Glen Brodowsky,Ph.D., earned a Ph.D. in Marketing from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He holds a B.A. in Far Eastern Languages and Civilizations from University of Chicago. He has taught Global Marketing, Marketing Communications, and Market- ing Research at CSUSM and is currently the Department Chair of Management and Marketing. Dr. Brodowsky has lived and worked in China, Japan, and Taiwan and speaks Mandarin Chinese.

Aaron J. Byzak, MBA, has worked as an advisor on policy and political matters for elected officials at the state and local level, and served as a federal health policy reform surrogate speaker for Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign in 2008. Aaron has been serving as Director of Government and Community Affairs for UC San Diego Health Sciences since 2009. In this role, Aaron handles all legislative and community relations activites on behalf of UC San Deigo Health System, UCSD School of Medicine and the Skaggs School at UCSD. He has a BA in Social Science from Chapman University and an MBA in Healthcare Management & Policy from the UC Irvine School of Business.
BrandonCesmat winner of the San Diego Book Award, has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. He is the past president of California Poets in the Schools, the largest artist residency in the U.S., and currently teaches at Cal State San Marcos.

EricaDuran is a lecturer at Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College. She holds a Master’s degree in Literature and Writing, and completed her graduate thesis on the autobiographical nature of Ernest Hemingway’s novel “Across the River and Into the Trees”. Erica is also a produced playwright, and has an intense love for her newest hobby, listening to audio books!

France‐MarieHaeger is a Fine‐Arts instructor, an artist and a Registered and Board Certified art therapist. In the U.S., France‐ Marie is program advisor and instructor for the “Art and Creative Process” Certificate Program she helped design for UCSD Extension. She teaches Fine‐Arts and Art Appreciation in various venues in San Diego County. She helped design two Expressive Arts Therapy programs in San Diego and for 4 years acted as a coordinator and core faculty at San Diego University for Integrative Studies and core faculty at ISIS/Expressive Arts Institute as well as teaching in the UCSD Extension Certificate Program. France‐Marie has exhibited her work in Switzerland and the U.S. Portraiture capturing the essence and inner life of an individual is her goal. She teaches also in gradu- ate programs in art and art therapy in Switzerland where she created the first Art Therapy Program in French speaking Switzerland.

Philip Goscienski, MD, retired from the Navy with the rank of captain, and head of the Infectious Diseases Branch, in the Depart- ment of Pediatrics at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. Formerly Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California at San Diego School of Medicine, he continues to teach medical students on a volunteer basis.

JimHinton Folksinger/ Songwriter/ Folklorist, Jim Hinton has been performing folk music professionally for over 40 years. He sings and accompanies himself on guitar, mandocello, harmonica, and bodhran (the Irish drum). He specializes in the traditional songs of Ireland performing at pubs, festivals, schools, churches and coffeehouses throughout the western states. He has founded and directed two successful folk groups, and served seven years as the contemporary choir director for Fletcher Hills Presbyterian Church. Beginning in 2009, Jim and his wife, anthropologist Cheryl Hinton, have presented a series of classes for adult enrichment and extended studies programs. He graduated summa cum laude from San Diego State University earning his degree in psychology with a minor in religious studies.
