y the Cynic says you can learn a lot about a
man by how he handles three issues: rainy days, lost lug- gage and tangled Christmas tree lights. You can learn something
about a bridge player by how he handles entangle- ments: blocked suits and a lack of entries. In today’s deal, East’s double of six hearts asked West to lead a spade. When he led the deuce, South had to take the ace and faced the problem of finding an extra entry to dummy when none seemed to exist. Alas, South saw noth-
ing better than to cash his trumps and the A-K of clubs. When the queen didn’t fall, he conceded two spades. Could you get untangled and make the slam? South can create a dummy
entry. After he draws trumps and cashes the top clubs, he takes the A-Q of dia- monds and leads the jack of clubs. When East plays low, South discards the king of diamonds. West takes the queen but
must return a diamond or a club, and South pitches his losing spades on the ten of diamonds and ten of clubs. DAILY QUESTION You hold: ♠ A Q 6 4 ♥ 7 6 ♦ Q 10 2 ♣ J 10 4 3 Your partner opens one
heart, you respond one spade and he bids two dia- monds. What do you say? ANSWER: This decision is
tight. A bid of 2NT to invite game would be a slight stretch: It would show 10 or 11 points. The alternative is a return to two hearts. If vulnerable, I would prefer the bold 2NT. I would like the ten of diamonds and ten of clubs and would upgrade the hand’s potential.
