The Magnum has distinctly shaper edges and ends than the Sniper, Riot’s other (completely different) creek boat. The Magnum is sleeker and lighter weight suggesting it is designed more for avoiding rocks rather than bouncing off them. If precision and responsiveness are things you like to have on a creek the Magnum is your weapon. A slight V-hull, decent length and overall
light weight made it feel like one of the fastest boats in the field, both off the line and driving full speed ahead. The Magnum separates itself from the pack
when it comes to crashing holes. You don’t get the same bow-lifting sensation you do in some other boats with larger bows. In the Mag- num you punch deep through holes instead. Whether this suits your style is an open ques- tion, but it’s nice to have a boat with defined edges to help flush you out of holes that are holding on tight. These same hard edges allow for very crisp
moves. The Magnum actually paddles a lot like a playboat. When it comes to the respon- siveness of the edges, the Magnum is going to make the transition from a playboat easier for new creekers. That said, the Magnum is not just a beginner boat; it received some of the highest overall scores. The pivoting thigh hooks of our 2005 test
model were universally reviled, but Riot has upgraded to a fixed thigh brace system for this year. The backband can be raised and low- ered to fit your back, and the seat can easily be moved fore or aft, important for expedition paddling when you have loads in the stern. The Magnum is perfectly suited to darting around on technical creeks.
