Hard Labour in Siberia

Straddling the Mongolian border, the glaciated plateaus of Siberia’s Altai Mountains feed valley rivers that run deeply through sheer gorges and drop steeply onto the steppes below. The Altai’s are one place you can still find the elusive snow leopard. But don’t bother looking for an even-rarer Altai portage. When seven paddlers ventured deep into the Altais during a six-week expedition last summer they found more untouched rivers than roads, and surprised even themselves by what they’d do to get into a river that had never been run.

Story and PHotoS by SetH Warren

Baskaus River, day 1. “The Baskaus has been run since the 1970s. We assumed it would be a good warm-up for the more remote Chebdar River. I wish we had a warm-up for the warm-up.”
