WO Putting Money Where Kipawa’s Mouth Is

Whitewater Ontario, a non-profit whitewater organiza- tion, has donated $10,000 to Les Amis de la Rivière Kipawa so the group can continue its costly legal battle against the federal government’s plan to replace an ex- isting dam with a new, unrunnable, bottom-release dam. WO president Cam McDermaid says this is the first time a documented history of whitewater paddling will be applied to the federal Navigable Waters Act to argue against a development that would restrict recreational navigation of a river. “This is a landmark case,” says Mc- Dermaid. “WO did not want it to be lost because of a lack of funding.”

Carbon Shortage

An increase in demand from aerospace and military mar- kets has caused carbon fibre manufacturers to abandon recreational markets in favour of big-ticket contracts. Andy Bridge of Werner Paddles says high-grade, car- bon-woven fabrics are becoming increasingly difficult to procure, with the likely result being higher prices for car- bon fibre paddles. F-14s and stealth bombers should fall in price slightly.

Right to Paddle in Texas

A state law passed in Texas ensured the right of schools to use paddling as a form of corporal punish- ment. The law was in reaction to a proposal that only parents, grandparents, or guardians be allowed to paddle the asses of wayward kids. Paddle manufactur- ers from across the United States and Singapore are lobbying to become the exclusive suppliers to Texas school districts.

Boatwerks Packs Up Ottawa Trailer

The Boatwerks Ottawa River mobile trailer-store was hauled away for good last fall. Justin Thompson, man- ager of the six-year-old offshoot of the Minden-based Boatwerks store, says that with the recent decrease in traffic at the Ottawa River put-in, it wasn’t worth operat- ing the fully stocked and staffed trailer. Forgetful pad- dlers will now have to hassle local farmers when they need to borrow skirts, helmets and PFDs.
