espite a performance by pouty-lipped, helmet- haired tweener heartthrob

Justin Bieber—and another by PBS’s least favorite pop star, Katy Perry—the size of the audience that watched this year’s Grammy Nominations Concert on CBS plunged by about 20 percent compared with last year, to 5 million viewers. That’s also down a troubling

30 percent compared with the nomination-unveiling-cum- concert special’s debut on CBS in 2008. The Recording Academy

showered rapper Eminemwith 10 Grammy nominations including Albumof the Year, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Bieber received his very first Grammy nominations —for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. Perry’s “Teenage Dream” is up for Albumof the Year. Those two earlier Grammy

Nominations Concerts had one thing in common: their lead-in was “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” This year’s lead-in? A “CriminalMinds” rerun.

HIGHLIGHTS When a popular high school

student is a star on the basketball court but underperforms in the classroom on made-for-TV movie “AWalk inMyShoes” (NBC at 8), his frazzled teacher, Trish, blames his attitude on bad parenting. But as usually happens in holiday season films, there’s a twist: after a car accident, Trish wakes up in the body of the student's mother and learns that you should never judge so harshly without learning all the facts. Maroon 5 covers Taylor Swift’s

“Mine” while DariusRucker and Adele croon Lady Antebellum’s “Need YouNow”—what kind of upside-down show is this?! Turns out, it’s “CMT Artists of the Year” (CMT at 8), a 90-minute special hosted byKevin Costner that celebrates the 2010 accomplishments of Swift, Lady A, CarrieUnderwood, Jason Aldean and the Zac Brown Band, and calls on a fewfellow acts to help honor the chosen five. Plus, DCchefRJ Cooper joins two other award-winning chefs to create the tasting menu for the event. Christmas shoppers get an

unfortunate surprise while on the hunt for bargains on “CSI: NY” (CBS at 9) when a manager is found dead in a holiday display window of a department store. An Internal Affairs

investigator (guest star Josh Malina) is not a fan of Dan’s (Bradley Whitford,Malina’s old “West Wing” co-star) eccentric policemethods on the job on “The GoodGuys” (Fox at 9), and

Do the Grammy noms need

Rudolph to succeed? The trophy show itself has

always been one of themost confusing—does anyone know which category is themost important? Song of the Year? Best New Artist? Albumof the Year? Record of the Year? But it’s been getting strong ratings since the producers and CBS discovered the cheesetastic-ness of pairing, say, the Jonas Brothers with StevieWonder, and seeing what develops. At this year’s Grammy Awards, scheduled for the February “sweep” period, we’re praying they will pair Justin Bieber with LizaMinnelli. But anyway, getting back to

Wednesday’s ratings, CBS probably should have had the cast of “Glee” performduring the strange hybrid of a show. Yes, this year’s Grammy Awards will feature the “Glee” gang— because it’s nominated for Best Pop Performance by Duo or

re-opens an old case for the purpose of bringing him down. “Primetime:WhatWould You

Do?” (ABC at 9) uses hidden cameras to see how random people react when parents get angry in public, starting with a father who has a meltdown in a restaurant when his son tells him he’s gay, followed by a mother who screams insults at her daughter’s ice skating practice. Newseries “GoldRush:

Alaska” (Discovery at 10) tracks six men who are tired of the economic meltdown and decide to sell all their stuff and head to the Alaska wilderness for the chance to strike it rich while mining for gold. “The Soup” (E! at 10) rings in

300 episodes of making fun of celebrities and reality shows, with the always snarky Joel McHale as host. BillHemmer hosts “Fox News

Reporting: The LastDays of John Lennon” (FoxNews Channel at 10), and the report looks at what happened when NewYork Police Department officers were called to the scene of Lennon’s death 30 years ago. Comedian Louis C.K. is a guest

on “The Tonight ShowWith Jay Leno” (NBC at 11:35), along with Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who was forced to amputate his own arm when he was trapped under a boulder in 2003. “Late Late ShowWith Craig

Ferguson” (CBS at 12:35) hosts actressKristen Bell and musical guestMichael Franti.

rabid fans will follow the show’s performers anywhere—even to Fox nemesis CBS—which could help ratings for the trophy show, particularly since the Grammys are scheduled to air Feb. 13 which is just days after “Glee’s” triumphant return froma long hiatus with a post-Super Bowl episode. But even so, there is also a

growing sense that Americans might just be suffering from music trophy-show fatigue. The twomost recent such

HONORS:DariusRucker, left, and Adele perform during the CountryMusic Television Artists of the Year show (at 8).

It’s her birthday and she should cry if she wants to

Hi,Carolyn: My 50th birthday is on Sunday.

For better or forworse,my family (parents, sibs, the entire extended family) and I are estranged. I’ve been disowned; actually, it’s been more of amutual disownment and my trust in the family is blown to bits. Weirdly enough,my brain knows

it’s for the best, like a bra that never quite fits right—it’s annoying and irritating, you’re better off ditching it and buying one the right size. I’mamuch happier personwithout the constant judgment. And yet it’s times like this—you

know, a big day or event in one’s life—when the 10-year-old inme feels like crying. It’s like I’mmourning the loss of

a family that never existed except inmy head. There’s a part ofme that can’t stop hoping. So, how does one finally quit hoping and really get onwith life? Happy birthday tome

NICK GALIFIANAKIS FOR THE WASHINGTON POST

If you really aremuch happier now, and the grief really does

sense of loss comes from knowing howtransformative love can bewhen it’s present, and howdebilitating its absence can be.

Yourmemories and depth of CAROLYN HAX

strikemostly atmilestones, then I’d argue you have gotten onwith your life. Given the breadth and finality

of your estrangement, there’s little to distinguish it, emotionally, froma death. And while survivors do eventually emerge fromthe pool of tears, they still get caught off-guard sometimes, miss the person so much it aches sometimes, relive the pain as if itwere yesterday sometimes. But you grieve for the living, so

hope lives, too. Your vulnerability to grief and

hope comes in part from memory; your past lives in you. And, too, the ability to feel deeply comes into play, since an acute

feeling are the foundation of empathy, and empathy is your gift to the people you dowelcome into your life. If the 10-year-old in youwants to cry sometimes, then let her cry. I’d bemore concerned if she never spoke up at all.

Carolyn: My cousins and I do a Christmas

gift exchangewhere all the names are thrown into a hat (there are 10 of us, ages 18 to 35). I have amajor gripewith the system, though it’s petty. My unclemarried “Jill” a couple of years ago. “Jill” has a thirtysomething daughterwhomI absolutely can’t stand and don’t see asmy cousin. Jill is very insistentwe include her daughter in all family things and nowher awful daughter is in our cousin gift exchange. I’ve enjoyed the exchange in the past, but I’mnot sure I’mmature

enough to buy Evil, AdultDaughter a gift. AmI being too bratty if I opt out?

Bratty or brave? If Iwere Jill’s daughter, I’d be

embarrassed and opting out myself. You’re all free to opt out, even

if the reasons are childish.Which yours are. As long as you keep themto

yourself, though, they’re not the issue here; being self-defeating is. You reallywant to quit something you enjoy, just because youmight have to buy thiswoman a gift or two every 10 years?Wouldn’t inclusion—even if it’s grudging —trump exclusion, and feel better than stalking off in a huff?
